UNDER_HERITAGE – Advanced Digital Technologies for the Integrated Management and Valorisation of Underground Cultural Heritage

The Castilla y León – Northern Portugal area has significant underground cultural heritage, including historic wine cellars, mines, and caves with historical, archaeological, and geological value. These sites form part of a shared cultural legacy and offer strong potential for sustainable tourism and education. However, because they are underground, they often remain unnoticed and face challenges related to management, conservation, and valorisation.

The UNDER_HERITAGE project aims to improve the detection, monitoring, and conservation of this heritage through the use of advanced digital technologies, enabling more efficient management and long-term preservation.

General objective of the project

The main objective of UNDER_HERITAGE is to develop an innovative and integrated system that uses advanced digital technologies for the detection, evaluation, monitoring, and analysis of underground cultural heritage, ensuring its preservation and valorisation through informed and intelligent decision-making strategies.

Main expected achievements

The project aims to achieve the following results:

Design and implement a comprehensive and sustainable system based on advanced technologies such as remote sensing, hyperspectral imaging, advanced sensors, artificial intelligence, and robotics to detect, evaluate, monitor, and conserve underground cultural heritage.
Develop and apply management and conservation protocols based on reliable data, advanced analysis, and digital technologies, providing public authorities and heritage stakeholders with practical tools for preservation and sustainable use.
Enhance the value of underground cultural heritage in the Castilla y León – Northern Portugal cross-border area by strengthening its historical recognition, tourism appeal, and educational potential through innovative digital solutions.
Test new forms of interaction and dissemination of underground cultural heritage using digital technologies that connect local communities, visitors, and heritage managers.
