HYSTORENEW – Green Hydrogen: The Energy Vector of the Future

Project Description:

HYSTORENEW (Research and integration of the technologies and processes involved in the introduction of green hydrogen as a strategic energy vector) is a multisectoral and multidisciplinary R&D consortium based on effective collaboration. It brings together seven leading companies covering the entire green hydrogen value chain, led by Capital Energy and supported by six leading research organisations in Spain.

The aim of the HYSTORENEW project is to research cutting-edge technologies that enable optimised and safe hydrogen management solutions in the areas of strategic project analysis, hydrogen production from renewable energy sources, H₂ transport and storage using gas infrastructure, its use in industrial environments, and hydrogen applications in transportation.

Problem to Be Addressed:

Hydrogen can be used as a feedstock for other compounds, as a fuel, or as a means of transporting and storing energy. It has numerous applications for reducing greenhouse gas emissions in electricity generation—particularly by enabling greater integration of renewable energy into the electricity system—as well as in industry, transport, including fuel cell vehicles, and residential applications.

However, high costs and limited technological maturity currently restrict its widespread use.

Therefore, the large-scale adoption of hydrogen requires the creation of an entirely new market of considerable size and complexity within a relatively short period of time, while addressing significant technological, economic, political and organisational challenges. This requires research not only into hydrogen generation, storage, transport and utilisation technologies, but also into the management of hydrogen as an energy vector from a holistic perspective.

The HYSTORENEW project will facilitate the adoption of a set of interconnected technological solutions for the optimised and safe management of green hydrogen production by electrolysis, storage, transport and utilisation projects, applicable across several key areas of this energy vector.

Project Objectives:

The technical objectives of the HYSTORENEW project are:

  • Research emerging technological areas to develop advanced proprietary solutions for hydrogen generation—including high-pressure electrolysis and renewable energy integration—storage, transport and utilisation, such as fuel cells and synthetic fuels, as well as enabling technologies that improve process effectiveness and efficiency, including Digital Twins, Artificial Intelligence, and satellite and geospatial data analysis.
  • Integrate all research activities into a set of solutions covering the entire green hydrogen value chain.
  • Introduce new capabilities and services to Spanish industry.
  • Generate new scientific and technological knowledge to incorporate innovation and research into companies’ processes, products and services, while strengthening Spain’s science and technology system.
  • Develop distinctive, high-value capabilities and technologies to improve international competitiveness.
  • Promote the green transition.
