
CLIC: Local, Integrated and Compatible Construction – Transforming industrialised construction through interoperable, modular and locally adapted systems
One of the major challenges currently facing society is access to housing. The housing crisis, the shortage of land designated for development and the obsolescence of certain regulations, among other factors, are contributing to a structural shortage of housing across the country, particularly affordable housing.
Project Description
The CLIC – LOCAL, INTEGRATED AND COMPATIBLE CONSTRUCTION project aims to ensure, through research into key aspects of construction industrialisation, that industrialised construction meets the expectations and objectives established in the PERTE for Housing Industrialisation, delivering measurable and transferable results to the sector.
General Objective
The project’s main objective is to contribute, through scientific and technical knowledge, to improving competitiveness in industrialised housing construction, ultimately enhancing quality, reducing costs and improving sustainability, while fostering the development of an industrial ecosystem around housing construction within the territory.
To achieve this, the project focuses on four complementary areas:
- Research into compatibility and integration between systems, resource optimisation, waste reduction and environmental impact assessment.
- The promotion of advanced digitalisation and interoperability techniques.
- Analysis of production and logistics systems.
- Knowledge transfer to the construction industry.
All of these activities are supported by the driving effect of the project’s implementation across the territory through AEIs, knowledge and technology centres, and all the stakeholders involved in the initiative.
Specific Objectives
In line with the areas defined above, the project has established the following specific objectives:
- Generate structured knowledge on industrialised construction systems and their compatibility, developing technical criteria and rules to facilitate their integration into building projects, promote interoperability between solutions from different manufacturers, and contribute to improved quality, sustainability and cost reduction.
- Research and validate innovative technologies and materials to improve efficiency and reduce waste, prioritising weight reduction, enhanced technical performance and the feasibility of closed-loop resource cycles.
- Assess and investigate the environmental impact of innovative materials used in industrialised construction, with the aim of promoting and scaling more efficient and sustainable construction systems.
- Research and compare collaborative digital platform architectures that enable real-time management, traceability, automation and coordination among the different stakeholders involved in industrialised construction, incorporating tools to integrate usability, personalisation and adaptation to residents’ needs.
- Analyse interdisciplinary collaboration and early integration models involving developers, designers, manufacturers and maintenance providers, with the aim of overcoming the sector’s traditional fragmentation and assessing their potential to improve overall system performance and respond to specific housing demands.
- Analyse and compare centralised and distributed manufacturing models to assess the feasibility of microfactories and define strategic, technical and organisational criteria that ensure a sustainable, scalable and competitive framework.
- Promote the gradual transition towards construction industrialisation by transferring the advances and knowledge generated throughout the project to the sector and working closely with industry stakeholders to facilitate the use of the knowledge acquired and the implementation of new solutions.
